Woman Injured by Landmine Explosion in Loikaw Village

A woman was injured in a landmine explosion inside a residential compound in Linphon Lay village, Loikaw Township, Karenni State—an area currently under the control of the military council—according to local sources.

The incident occurred on March 20, when the 55-year-old woman was cleaning her yard and the landmine detonated. She sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at Loikaw General Hospital, sources said.

“We heard that landmines in that area have not yet been fully cleared,” said a female resident of Loikaw.

Although the military council has stated that mine clearance operations have been carried out in wards and villages across Loikaw, residents say civilians returning to their homes and carrying out cleaning work continue to be injured by landmines.

Locals added that the highest number of landmine-related injuries has been reported in areas of Loikaw that experienced intense fighting during the “1111 Operation,” including the wards of Minsu, Naung Yar, Nanat Taw, Mone Lone, Daw U Khu, and Chikal village tracts.

On January 21, a man was also injured after stepping on a landmine while clearing his yard in Daw U Khu ward, Loikaw Township.
