The Voice of female candidates in conflict-hit Arakan State

The Voice of female candidates in conflict-hit Arakan State

Daw Ma Than Nu, the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD)

Lower House Candidate, Myebon Township Constituency-1

The current situation is not like the 2015 Election due to the COVID-19 and the ongoing civil war.

This is the election campaign period. According to the order issued by the district commission, we cannot do door-to-door canvassing in townships where the stay-home-rule has been imposed. There is no regional security. I don’t know how the election commission will arrange the security for candidates. The election commission should make necessary arrangements for the security of candidates during the canvassing period.

I am committed to supporting regional development, children and women’s rights. To be honest, I am constantly working on the regional development tasks in cooperation with the Arakan State government. I have helped the victims of three rape cases in Myaebon Township. I am also engaging in fighting for the rights of farmers.

Daw Mya Mya Thein, the Arakan National Party (ANP)

Lower House Candidate, Maungdaw Township

The reason why I decided to compete in the upcoming election is that working for the regional development inside parliament will be more effective than that outside the parliament. I will work on the restoration of human dignity to the Arakan people. The priority task is to stop all wars.

I will try my best to systematically promote the standing of Arakan State which is in a bad state. I will work for the emergence of a federal system in cooperation with other ethnic members of parliament, and to ensure the sharing of resources in Arakan State. As a new female candidate, I will encourage politicians to be more women- inclusive and help organize more female voices to be heard.

I will reform some parts taking lessons from past events and have committed to working for the development of Arakan State. Due to the spread of COVID-19, I cannot do canvassing. I face many difficulties due to the restrictions. I have no big challenges. The reason is I am a teacher.

I am a local. I have no difficulties as I have been engaging in philanthropic works keeping abreast of the people.

One advantage is I have registered to compete in the election, representing the ANP. The Arakan people favor the ANP’s policy. The ANP members have many advantages as every Arakan people have patriotic spirits.

Daw Khin Mu, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP)

Upper House Candidate, Constituency-11

I was a retired teacher. Before joining the teaching career, I was a USDP member. The party’s senior officials told me to compete in the election when I got the retirement. I decided to become a candidate who will serve the interest of people.

I will carry out the development of people in my constituency in accordance with the policies set by the USDP.

The major challenge is I cannot conduct the election campaign due to the stay-home rule imposed in all townships in Arakan State.   As an advantage, the USDP is still a united and strong one.

Daw May Nwe Soe, the Arakan League for Democracy (ALD)

Lower House Candidate, Thandwe Township Constituency-1

The reason why I compete in the election is to enable the locals to enjoy the fair laws. The confiscated farmlands cannot be returned to the owners till now. I want to help the farmers.

Another problem is unemployment. The people have to live under the poverty line. I will create employment opportunities to help them get out of the poverty line.

Females can solve many problems males cannot deal with. I want the inclusion of more females in politics. I have many plans to extend a helping hand to them.

I have had no challenge so far. As an ALD member, the party was set up since 1988. The persons who founded the party have good reputations. The good image of the ALD is cheering for us.

The major difficulty is I cannot do the canvassing directly. Most locals are not familiar with the technology. I face difficulty connecting most farmers as they have no mobile phones.
