After being granted amnesty by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), detainee Nang Mo Hom was sent back to her family in Namkham by TNLA ally the Shan State Progressive Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) on Wednesday.

The transfer took place in the SSPP/SSA headquarters in Shan State’s Wan Hai, following an October 15 TNLA statement in which it was stated that the Shan mother of three could go back home after two months under arrest by the armed group for allegedly violating their criminal code.

According to the statement, Nang Mo Hom was transferred to the SSPP/SSA’s Maj Than Aung, and administrator Sao Thiha, as well as three of her family family members.

Nang Mo Hom had been convicted in a TNLA central court, charged under their Criminal Act 222 on October 5 and sentenced to three years in prison.

TNLA spokesperson Maj Mai Aik Kyaw told NMG on October 9 that Nang Mo Hom had disturbed on-duty TNLA officers last year—when they were collecting “tax” in her community—leading to one being killed by the Burma Army and one injured.

Shan civil society organizations requested that the Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee (FPNCC) negotiate for Nang Mo Hom’s release.

With arrangements made by the FPNCC, Nang Mo Hom’s family members and four representatives of Shan civil society groups directly discussed the issue with TNLA leaders at a hall belonging to the United Wa State Army’s external affairs office in Panghsang on October 9.

The FPNCC and a Shan civil society network released a joint statement following the negotiations, declaring that the TNLA had “agreed to release Nang Mo Hom soon” in order to foster “unity and good relations between the Shan and Ta’ang” ethnic groups.
