Three students injured after junta shell struck KNU’s vicinity of school

Some students were injured when a shell fired by the regime troops exploded in the vicinity of the school in the territory of KNU Brigade 2, Taungoo District, according to local sources.

When there was no fighting, the military unit based in Taungoo fired artillery shells indiscriminately around 11:00 p.m. on June 14, and one of them blew up near the student dormitory near Hto Lwee Wah High School in Htantapin Township.

Three students who lived in the dormitory were reportedly injured in the explosion, and one was seriously injured.

Local sources said the school was currently closed after the explosion.

Hto Lwee Wah High School, located in the territory of KNU Brigade 2, is under the Department of Karen Education and Culture Department (KECD) of KNU, with roughly 2,000 students enrolled.

The rival forces, the junta army and the combined forces of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), are engaged in heavy battles in the territory of KNU Brigade 2, and the artillery shelling of regime forces destroyed residential houses.

In June, the junta aerial bombardment caused an explosion in the school compound in Kawkayeik Township of KNU Brigade 6, destroying some parts of school building.

According to KNU’s Karen Education and Culture Department (KECD), 17 schools were destroyed by the attacks of the regime troops in the KNU-held areas in more than two years since February 1, 2021, when the military seized power.
