The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Myanmar has expressed strong protest and solemn condemnation in response to China’s conducting military exercises encircling Taiwan from 4-7 August, according to a press release by the office in Yangon.

The statement dated 6 August reads as follows:

The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) always extends welcome to international friends supporting Taiwan’s values of freedom and democracy. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is a significant testimony of the long-standing and strong Taiwan-U.S. friendship.

China responded by conducting a series of military exercises encircling Taiwan, including air and sea drills and test firing of conventional missiles from Aug. 4-7, amounting to a blockade of Taiwan’s air and sea and severely breaching the rules-based international order.

In addition, China, through its embassies, has launched a pressure campaign aimed at getting its allies to issue official statements reiterating their One China policy and silencing the global community’s support of Taiwan.

It is an objective truth that the two sides across the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other; Taiwan government remains consistent in its policy in achieving peace across the Taiwan Strait through dialogue.

Taiwan government has been closely watching the developments of the current situation, exercising prudence and caution in our responses, and preventing the Chinese Communist Party from waging cognitive warfare and infiltration to divide our society. Our military has also been on high alert of the situation and fully ready to make timely and appropriate responses. Meanwhile, we have been in close contact and collaboration with neighboring countries.

Taiwan is backed by its 23.5 million peace-loving people and receives firm support of like-minded countries in the international community. All Taiwanese are committed to protect national security and sovereign integrity and our obligation of maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait and stability of the Indo-Pacific region.
