The Mon Literature and Culture Committee (Yangon) announced that the 2026 Summer Mon Literature and Mon Language Speaking Course will be held from March 2 to April 3 at 15 teaching centres in the Yangon Region.

The courses will be opened in Townships across the Yangon Region where Mon people live, including South Dagon Township, Thanlyin, Shwepyitha, Insein, Hlaingthaya, Dawbon, Pale Myothit (Shwenanthar, Ngwenanthar), Mingaladon (Bo Chan), Hlegu, Hmawbi, Bahan, Hlaing/ Mayangon, South Okkalapa, Htantabin.

“Last year, the course was opened at 14 locations. This year, one more site has been opened in Htantabin, where classes had previously been suspended due to teachers going abroad,” said Nai Khin Latt, Chair of the Literature Sub- Committee.

A total of 20 teachers, including 10 from the Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) and 10 from the Yangon Region, will teach the courses.

The classes will be taught for up to one month, with students divided by grade level- primary, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 following a curriculum designed to be easily understood and accepted by students.

“Many children in Yangon Region cannot speak or understand Mon due to mixed family backgrounds, so the classes teach both spoken Mon and Literacy to help them learn the language and understand their Mon identity,” he added.

He also urged Mon youth living in the Yangon Region, as well as anyone interested in learning Mon language and literature, to attend the nearest teaching centres, where classes are offered free of charge.

The classes will begin on March 2, and township- level examinations will be held on April 3.

The central- level exam will be held on the morning of April 5, followed by the course completion and awards ceremony in the afternoon at the Mon Pitaka Library in Dagon Township.

The Mon Literature and Culture Committee (Yangon), founded in 1972, offers summer Mon Language courses every year. About 300 students attended in 2024 and around 350 in 2025.

In Mon State, the 2026 summer Mon literature courses began in February, with officials from the Mon Literature course for 2026 having started and been open for teaching since then.
