Students object to plan of building high-court on Hakha GTI campus

Hakha GTI Students’ Union has objected to the Chin State government’s plan to build a high court on Hakha Government Technical Institute (GTI) campus, which has been slated to build new buildings for the institute.

In a statement released on August 27, Hakha GTI Students Union denounced the Chin State government for robbing the precincts in front of the GTI, which is less than one acre, even though there are other lands to build the high court.

“As Chin students, we would be very glad if such kind of new buildings are to be built in the Chin State, but we want them to be built in another area. It would be convenient for them if they build it in another area and give this land to our GTI. The disputed land is very small and I believe it’s not that necessary for a grand building,” said Ko Marn Hre Liang, chair of Hakha GTI Students Union.

Former Chin State Chief Minister U Hong Ngai gave this land to GTI students.

Hakha GTI Students Union claimed in the statement that the Chin State government’s action seems to destroy the potential of Chin students instead of supporting their education.

U Soe Htet, spokesperson of the Chin State government and Minister of Municipal Affairs, said land is needed to build a city-standard high court in Hakha and nothing will happen to the GTI if it gives the land for the high court.

“It will be convenient for us if we can get this land to build a new high court with an international design. The Chin State government already has an office. There is also a building for the parliament. A court is an important building for the judiciary pillar so the Chief Minister requested this land from their teachers. Nothing will happen to them if they give it to us. The land has 40 feet of road frontage and 200 feet in the back.  If we can get it, we can build the high court that is up to standard,” said Minister U Soe Htet.

In the statement, Hakha GTI Students Union gave the last warning to the Chin State government by telling them not to lay down any brick, sand, or nail on the disputed land and even think about making a move to build the high court.
