Considerably more students have been enrolled at schools for the 2025 to 2026 academic year than in recent years in junta-controlled Hakha City, the Chin State capital.

A Hakha City resident said: “Schools in Hakha City started taking enrollments last week and this year there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of students compared to previous years. Students aren’t just coming from Hakha itself, many are also arriving from other Chin State townships like Falam, Thantlang, and Matupi to enrol. That’s really contributed to the increase in enrollments. At the moment, in Hakha City, Basic Education High Schools 1, 2, and 3, as well as private schools, are all accepting student applications for the new academic year.”

Though the exact number of enrolled students is not yet known, visibly more students have been enrolling than in previous years.

The enrolment period for the 2025 to 2026 academic year runs from 22 May to 1 June 2025.

For the 2024 to 2025 academic year, 4,361 students were enrolled in the six schools, made up of four high schools, one middle school and one primary school, that opened in Hakha City that year.

In the junta-controlled Chin State towns of Hakha and Tedim the junta authorities are working hard to be able to reopen schools by early June.
