Residents reports the military council has imposed stricter security measures and tightened restrictions on freedom of movement in Loikaw, a junta-controlled city, as the date for Phase One of the election approaches.
According to local residents, military patrols have increased in recent days, with security forces conducting vehicle patrols throughout the city. Movement is reportedly restricted between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.
“Nighttime security checks are being strictly enforced. Roads are blocked, and people found traveling outside the permitted hours are arrested. Police officers and motorcycle patrol units are stationed at the checkpoints, and many people have been detained,” said a woman living in Nam Paw Wan Ward in Loikaw.
Although a nighttime curfew and movement restrictions were imposed prior to the 1111 military operations earlier this year, residents say inspections have since become more stringent and enforcement has intensified.
Those found traveling during restricted hours are reportedly required to pay a fine of 30,000 kyats per motorcycle.
In addition, residents report frequent disruptions to internet and phone services. While the Mytel network is said to be partially functional, users face difficulties connecting to VPN services.
“Areas closer to military positions are worse. Sometimes you can’t even get a signal to make a phone call,” said a resident of the 500-Acre Ward.
With only days remaining before Phase One of the election is set to begin on December 28, security checks in Loikaw have become increasingly strict. At the same time, clashes between junta forces and resistance groups are reportedly ongoing in areas surrounding the city.
