Resistance group’s recruitment drive forces Matupi youths to flee

The Matupi Revolutionary Organisation/Chinland Defence Force – Matupi (MRO/CDF – Matupi), a resistance group controlling Matupi Town in Chin State’s Matupi Township, is conscripting young people over 16, forcing many to flee to nearby forests, town residents reported.

“The abductions of young people are still ongoing. On August 17, Luivang Village near Matupi Town was raided, and school-aged youths aged 16 and above were taken. Teachers tried to intervene but were unable to stop it. In total, 11 young boys were abducted, and two male teachers were also drafted, bringing the total to 13. As a result, all schools in Matupi Town and surrounding areas have been closed. Many of the young people are now hiding in the forests, while some have fled to Rezua Village,” said a Matupi resident.

Currently, MRO/CDF – Matupi is still recruiting conscripts in Khwahone, Daihnan, and Boiring villages in Matupi Township. According to local sources, the group has threatened that those who join voluntarily will serve for three years, while those forcibly abducted will be required to serve for six years.

The group also warned that everyone aged 16 to 40 is subject to conscription, and anyone who helps them avoid it will face consequences.

Chin World has reached out to MRO/CDF – Matupi regarding allegations of a forced conscription drive in Matupi Town and surrounding villages, but the group has not responded.

MRO/CDF – Matupi, aided by allied forces, captured Matupi Town on June 29, 2024.
