Political prisoners nearing sentence completion, long-term inmates released from Kale’s Mawlaik Prison

Some political prisoners nearing the end of their sentences at Mawlaik Prison, in Kale (Kalay) Town, Sagaing Region, along with several inmates serving long-term sentences, have been released, according to sources close to the freed prisoners.

On December 1, nine male and two female political prisoners were released from Mawlaik Prison, a source close to the matter confirmed.

“Yesterday, nine men and two women who had been jailed on political charges under Sections 52(A) and 505(A) were released from Mawlaik Prison. Most of them were already close to completing their sentences, while a few still had about a year left. Even some prisoners who had originally been sentenced to eight years were among those released,” he said.

On November 26, the junta announced the release and pardon of more than 8,000 prisoners, individuals who had fled to avoid arrest and those still facing charges under Section 505(A) of the Penal Code after the 2021 coup. The following day, November 27, junta authorities released additional political prisoners from prisons nationwide. While only five political prisoners were freed from Mawlaik Prison on that day, a further eleven were released on December 1.

There are more than 400 male and 100 female political prisoners in Mawlaik Prison, most of whom remain detained, according to sources close to the inmates.
