NUG preparing to establish Federal Union

U Kyaw Zaw, spokesperson for the President office of the National Unity Government (NUG), said that a road map reflecting the will of the people including all relevant stakeholders, is being implemented and preparations are being made to establish a federal union.

On October 7, he made the remarks at a press conference held by the NUG on the topic of "Reviews on the One-Year Anniversary of People's Defensive War and Presentation of Future Mission".

U Kyaw Zaw said that the NUG has formed a committee to draft an interim constitution and has prepared for the administration of the state and the establishment of a federal union during the transition period after the successful revolution.

He added that these processes are progressing to a certain extent, and everyone is in agreement in terms of policy, and it is still under negotiation.

Additionally, he stated that the NUG is trying to ensure that every ethnic group in Myanmar participates in the establishment of a federal union based on equal rights for all and self-determination.

Colonel Khun Okkar, the leader of the Pao National Liberation Organization (PNLO), said that NUG, the opposition organization, relies on the ethnic regions, so it is believed that it is adopting policies that favor the ethnic organizations.

He said that the National Unity Government (NUG) is currently fully cooperating with the eight powerful ethnic armed organizations and fighting together in the Spring Revolution.

Currently, the military council is fighting with the NUG and People’s Defense Forces (PDFs), as well as ethnic armed groups such as the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the Chin National Front (CNF), the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), the Karen National Union (KNU), the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), and the Arakan Army (AA).

According to political analyst U Than Soe Naing, the military council and NUG can only reach a verbal agreement for the establishment of the federal union, and it can only be put into effect after the end of the conflict.

On the other hand, the military council held peace talks with the ethnic armed organizations for the second time, and the junta chief said that the ethnic groups would be given their deserved federal rights.

The NUG said at the press conference that it is illegal for the military council to agree in principle to designate the "Wa" state and the Mong La self-administered region, and it will be processed only with public opinion in deciding the territory of a region as a state.

The NUG has defined the coming year 2023 as the year that will decide the revolution, and plans to counter the military council on six fronts, including political, military, economic, and international affairs.
