Han Tha Myint, a member of National League for Democracy (NLD) Central Executive Committee, was released from detention by the junta this afternoon due to poor health, an official of the NLD Central Information Committee confirmed to Mizzima.
Han Tha Myint was released from prison this afternoon after being detained by the junta and being charged under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code.
Han Tha Myint, 75, suffers from heart disease, hypertension and stroke. He received regular treatment at Yangon General Hospital and the Asia Royal Hospital while he was serving at the NLD headquarters in the past.
NLD’s Vice Chairperson Dr. Zaw Myint Maung and top NLD official Win Htein are also in poor health, but they are still being detained by the junta.
Another top NLD official Nyan Win died of ill health during his detention by the junta.
Currently, the junta is under pressure from the international community including ASEAN and is facing trial at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the alleged genocide of the Rohingya people.
Han Tha Myint was a winning electoral candidate in the 1990 General Elections of Myanmar. In 1996, the Union Election Commission announced his forced resignation from the post.
