Nine detainees have been indicted under Counter-Terrorism Law

The Yangon Region’s Western District court indicted Arakanese deportees under the Counter-Terrorism Law that might carry a life sentence on 9 August.

Ko Aung Mrat Kyaw, Ko Tun Aye, Ko Hein Zaw, Ko Ye Kyaw Htet, Ma May Gyi, Ko Tin Hlaing Oo, Ko Shwe Hlaing Than and Ko Myat Lay have been charged under section 50 (j) and 52 (a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.

Moreover, an arrest warrant has been issued for another two men, Ko Than Tun Naing and Maung Soe Myint, who have been accused under section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Meanwhile, Ko Aung Myo Win who has been separately accused under the same action was granted remand up to 23 August.

The Arakanese detainees got a chance to meet with their families yesterday when they appeared at the court.

Police Major Tin Shwe from Yangon Region’s Special Branch presented a grievance accusing them having of ties with the Arakan Army and providing financial aid to the AA.

The next court hearing for the nine Arakanese people who have been detained in Insein prison is scheduled for 23 August and trial for the two absconders will proceed in spite of the accused absence.

Six Arakanese people living in Singapore including leaders of the Arakan Association (Singapore) were detained in Yangon after they were arrested by the Singaporean authorities and deported from Singapore.

The Arakan Association (Singapore) is a social organization and provides aid for natural disaster and war victims, said leaders of the AA-S.
