On the morning of January 12, representatives from the two nations reopened the Thai-Myanmar No. 1 Friendship Bridge, which had been shut down for more than three years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thai authorities have repeatedly tried to reopen the No. 1 Friendship Bridge, which connects the Myanmar border towns of Myawaddy and Mae Sot, but Myanmar postponed the opening of the bridge due to the political unrest in the country.

According to the agreement between the two countries, the No. 1 Friendship Bridge, which serves as the international border entry and exit point, has now been reopened since the COVID-19 pandemic has been brought under control.

A Border Pass card can be obtained from the military council’s immigration department to pass from Myawaddy, Myanmar, to Mae Sot, Thailand. According to journalists based in Mae Sot, the vehicles from the Myanmar side have already entered Mae Sot since the bridge’s opening.

Officials of the Thai government said that they hoped that trade and tourism between Thailand and Myanmar would improve after the reopening of the No. 1 Friendship Bridge.

The Thailand-Myanmar No. 1 Friendship Bridge has been closed since February 2020.
