Myanmar UN ambassador calls for principles of R2P against junta

Myanmar’s Ambassador to United Nations U Kyaw Moe Tun called the United Nations to take actions against the junta regime of his country for its crime on civilians.

The global body held the ECOSOC Special Meeting on “Social and economic measures to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity” on 24 January 2023.

At the meeting, the ambassador said, “It is a high time for the UN to raise a single voice, uphold the principle of the responsibility to protect and act collectively by using all tools at its disposal to hold perpetrators including the military junta accountable and end their cycle of impunity.”

The Permanent Representative of Myanmar at the UN also pointed out the ‘fascist military’ committed numerous atrocities against Myanmar people including ethnic minorities and Rohingya in 2017.

The ambassador continued to say that during this 2-year period, the inhumane military junta has completely dismantled rule of law, and caused serious consequences to the population in Myanmar, even those in the region.

U Kyaw Moe Tun also asked the UN to protect Myanmar people from genocide, war crime, ethnic cleansing and crime against humanity of the junta.

He also stressed the unlawful junta and its enablers have consistently shown their disregard for human rights and humanity, and asked for the exercise of principle of Responsibility to Protect.

The ambassador finally remarked that Myanmar people’s call for declaration of no-fly-zone by the UN did not bear any fruit.
