Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand can register online and return home by bus starting May 22

Banyar Paing — On May 18th, the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand announced Myanmar migrant workers could register with the Myanmar’ Labor Attaché Office online and return home through specific border crossings starting May 22.

According to a negotiated agreement involving the Myanmar Embassy and Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, 5 buses per departure will travel from Mochit, Bangkok to Mae Sot, starting on May 22. The departure schedules will begin at 10 PM for one round [of departure] and at 11 PM for another round. Only 21 passengers are allowed per bus and the fare will be 1048 Baht. Each passenger can carry two bags wieghing no more than 20 kilograms.

Myanmar’ Labor Attaché office plans to allow advance bookings, via their office beginning May 20. On the day of departure, the migrant workers must gather at Myanmar Passport Office in Mahachai, no later than 5 PM. The bus fare from Mahachai to MoChit is 150 Thai Baht.

Those who want to return on their own must contact the Myanmar Embassy to fill out an individual registration form. Due to curfew restrictions people will only be able to travel between the hours of 4 am to 11 pm. Border crossing gates are at Mae Sai-Tachileik, Mae Sot-Myawaddy and Yanong-Kawthoung. Migrant workers may only travel by buses or vans that have the proper licences allowing them to pass through district and border gates on specific dates.
