Mizzima co-founder released from Insein jail

The co-founder of Mizzima media, Daw Thin Thin Aung, and staff member, James Pu Thoure, were freed from Insein jail in Yangon together with other political prisoners after the amnesty on 19 October.

Before they were reunited with their relatives and friends in front of prison, it was a heart-stopping moment when both of them were taken by a prison official at its main gate at 4:30 pm, saying they would have to face additional charges. However, they were finally released around 6:30 pm.

They were arrested on 8 April, and charged with section 505 (1) of the Penal Code, and also charged with section 17(1) of the Unlawful Association Act on 22 September.

Daw Thin Thin Aung was questioned at the Military Transit Center in Yangon for two weeks and then sent to Insein Prison where she was kept for six months.

Meanwhile, James Pu Thoure was reportedly tortured at the Military Transit Center.

Daw Thin Thin Aung, who is also an activist for women's rights, was welcomed by her colleagues, supporters and relatives in front of the prison who had already arrived there since early morning.

Moreover, a former editor of Mizzima media, Than Htike Aung, based in Nay Pyi Taw, is still under arrest under section 505 (a) since March.

A reporter of Mizzima media in Myeik Township, Zaw Zaw, was also freed from the local prison.

The military junta has filed a lawsuit against Mizzima Media under section 505 (a), and section 17/1, and issued warrants for the arrests of its 10 staff members, including the chief editor.
