Military junta tightens security and launches offensives in Kawthoung District

The military junta is tightening security and launching offensives in villages across Kawthoung and Khamaukgyi townships, Tanintharyi Region, according to revolutionary forces.

According to Ko Kyar Gyi, the spokesperson of the Kawthaung Township’s People’s Defense Force (PDF), junta troops have increased security at town checkpoints, set up ambushes along roads, and conducted offensives that have led to clashes with revolutionary forces.

“They are trying to block our forces from entering towns. They’ve stepped up searches and interrogations of travelers, set up ambushes on key routes, and are carrying out random checks on civilians. They’re also attacking villages near the towns,” he said.

On September 9, a junta column of more than 30 soldiers entered Khamauknge village, Khamaukgyi Township, using two small boats. Revolutionary forces ambushed them near the village, sinking one boat and killing several soldiers.

The following morning, September 10, two clashes broke out between junta troops and joint revolutionary forces during an offensive in Maliwan village, Kawthoung Township.

Revolutionary groups have urged the public to remain cautious, warning that the junta’s efforts to hold elections in Kawthoung District will intensify fighting.

“They are preparing for the election by training education staff and village administrators and forming election committees with people loyal to them. We warn these people not to cooperate. We will take effective action against anyone involved, in line with our procedures,” Ko Kyar Gyi said.

He added that revolutionary forces have already declared their full rejection of the junta’s planned election and pledged to resist it.

The military junta has announced that the first phase of voting will take place in Kawthoung, Dawei, Bokepyin, and Myeik townships in Tanintharyi Region. Offensives are also being launched to secure other townships for the election.
