Military Junta Intensifies Arrests During Guest List Inspections in Ye

The military junta has been conducting intensified guest list inspections in Ye Township, Mon State, leading to the continued arrests of local residents deemed suspicious during the process.

On the night of January 6, junta forces conducted inspections in Aungmyittar, Aungmingalar, and Chaung Taung wards of Ye Town. During these operations, three local men were detained and taken away for questioning, according to residents.

“They haven’t released those they detained yet, saying the investigation is ongoing. The individuals are reportedly from Ye Township, though not from the specific wards inspected. We heard they are all young men under 30 years old. Their families have been unable to contact them,” said a local source.

The junta’s inspections have reportedly included detaining individuals accused of having links to resistance groups, often without notifying local administrative officials, said the source.

“In recent cases, they haven’t informed ward administrators about their inspections. Previously, they would indicate which wards they planned to inspect, but now they operate independently. Military personnel typically lead these operations with teams of over 30 soldiers, arriving in five or six vehicles. They’ve been conducting guest list checks every two or three days recently. Anyone deemed suspicious is taken into custody, and in some cases, bribes are demanded. If issues arise, the detainees are handed over to junta police,” said a source close to a ward administrative team.

Recent reports also indicate that the military junta has been particularly scrutinizing individuals holding National Registration Cards (NRC) with numbers beginning with ‘13/,’ ‘14/,’ and ‘5/.’

In December 2024, at least 15 residents of Ye were arrested during similar inspections on suspicion of being linked to the People’s Defense Forces (PDF).
