Kachin parties come together by establishing Kachin State Party (KSP)

Four Kachin political parties have approved the name ‘Kachin State Party’ and the flag and emblem for the new party on August 11 as they reach the end of their merger journey.

The Kachin Democratic Party (KDP), the Kachin State Democracy Party (KSDP), the Kachin National Congress (KNC), and the Unity and Democracy Party of Kachin State (UDPKS) have agreed to abolish their parties and do politics under the new party ‘KSP’.

All four parties have agreed to use a flag depicting a green colored emblem of the Kachin State on red, white, and sky blue stripes as the party’s flag.

The 17-member committee, which has been established with public leaders, supervised the merger program.

A public briefing will be held soon to explain about the new party.

The merger journey of the Kachin political parties started in 2014 and more efforts have been made in the merger program due to public pressure after the parties received bad results in the 2015 Election.

The KDP, the KSDP, and the KNC signed a memorandum of understanding at Myikyina YMCA on January 13, 2018 after agreeing to the merger.

During the press conference held at Myitkyina Manau Ground on February 20, the three parties announced that they have agreed to use the ‘Kachin National Congress Party’ as the new name for the party.

The UDPKS joined the merger program after the Public and Party Conference was held under the leadership of the Kachin National Consultative Assembly, also known as the WMR, at the Manau Ground Majoi Gawknu Hall on January 10.

The 17-member committee was established with public leaders on that day in order to establish a merged party that represents the public in the Kachin State. Since it started the efforts to merge the parties, the committee has been able to approve the new party’s name, flag, and emblem on August 11.

The KDP chair U Gumgrawng Awng Kham has been selected to represent the Kachin merged party on June 5 to run for the Amyotha Hluttaw in Myitkyina Constituency – 2 in the by-election on November 3.
