The junta has intensified military operations in Madaya, Singu, and Thabeikkyin townships in northern Mandalay Region to expand its control ahead of the elections, civil organizations in the region and the People's Defence Force (PDF) reported.

Tens of thousands of residents are fleeing for safety as the junta’s military operations in the three townships intensify.

PDF and local civil groups suggested that the junta may be conducting military operations in these townships to eliminate resistance influence, as they are among the areas where voting is scheduled to take place in the junta-led elections later this year.

Clashes with local resistance forces escalated on November 10 after the junta launched military operations in Madaya, Singu, and Thabeikkyin townships, all located along the Ayeyarwady River.

In addition, the junta began using airstrikes and drone attacks, resulting in a sharp rise in civilian casualties.

A November 10 statement by the Mandalay-PDF (MDY-PDF) said the junta has been deploying overwhelming forces to launch attacks in Madaya, Singu, and Thabeikkyin ahead of the sham elections it plans to hold, as these three townships are designated as areas where voting will take place.

Heavy clashes have forced tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes, and aid workers said the displaced are in dire need of assistance.

“Most of the displaced people had to flee suddenly, without any time to prepare. Right now, their most urgent needs are basic food like rice and oil, warm clothing, and essential medicines for children and the elderly. The situation is really concerning,” a local aid worker said.

The MDY-PDF has announced that it will repel the junta’s offensive with its utmost effort. It has also urged residents in areas at risk of fighting to prepare in advance and make safety plans.
