Junta Seizes Myitkyina Home Of NUG Minister

Regime forces seized the home of Dr Tu Hkawng, a National Unity Government (NUG) minister, during a series of strikes against the interim government across the country last week. Armed forces bust into the house of the minister of Natural Resources and Conservation in Kachin State's capital city, Myitkyina, on Thursday.

''We saw many policemen and ward administers raiding Dr Tu Hkawng’s home but no soldiers,'' a 45-year-old woman from the area who witnessed the incident told NMG on condition of anonymity. At least 20 police were involved in the raid on the minister's house, which is located in Sitapru Ward.

Tu Hkawng is currently in hiding. On the same day of the raid, he announced on his Facebook page that the junta seized his bank account.

Last month, the minister attended an environmental conference hosted by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, marking the first time regional bloc has invited a member from the interim government. Last October, it excluded coup leader and army chief Min Aung Hlaing from joining a key summit for failing to end the turmoil in Burma.

On 14 December, the regime confiscated two houses belonging to Win Naing, a National League for Democracy MP from Namti town, Mogaung Township, who won during the 2020 race. The military overthrew the government on 1 February to prevent winning candidates from being sworn into office.
