The coup military regime has published the voter lists for the election it will oversee, scheduled to begin in late December, but public interest remains low.
The junta announced a phased election schedule, with Phase 1 set for December 28.
The junta announces voter lists to be posted at administration offices from September 30 to October 13 in Phase 1 townships.
The junta announced that voter lists will be posted at election commission branches and administration offices at the village, ward, and town levels. Those unable to check there can visit their township sub-committee offices.
However, public interest in checking or verifying the voter lists remains low. A voter remarked that people avoid the lists because they are convinced the junta will manipulate the election, rendering it a sham.
“People just aren’t interested in the election the junta is running. No matter how we vote, we know they’re going to rig it. From what we’ve seen, the current voter lists include lots of people who have died, who are abroad, or who have been conscripted. That’s not honest. That’s why we’re not going to recognize or trust any election the junta conducts,” he told Than Lwin Times.
The junta-controlled Union Election Commission (UEC) has released guidelines for correcting errors and addressing omissions in the voter lists.
One young man said he was less enthusiastic about checking the voter lists this time, citing the junta’s lack of transparency and the public’s general disinterest in the upcoming election.
“There’s really no enthusiasm this time. They’ve posted the voter lists, but most people, including me, just aren’t interested because the election won’t be honest or transparent. The junta has put up the lists, but I don’t think I’m going to go check them,” he noted.
The junta has announced it will republish the voter lists in November for a final revision. The UEC has urged at least one person from each household to check the voter lists to ensure the information is accurate.
