Junta airstrikes, artillery, drone attacks and arson by its soldiers has destroyed 524 houses in eight villages in Kyaukphyu Township in Arakan (Rakhine) State where fierce fighting is ongoing.

Between 20 February and 15 April 2025, according to data collected by DMG, 524 houses were confirmed destroyed or heavily damaged in the eight Kyaukphyu Township villages of: Kyattein, Ookin, Daunt Chaung, Shaut Chaung, Kat Thapyay, Kyan Chai, Pyinshay, and Kalaba.

A resident of Ookin Village said: “Most [houses] were burned to ashes by incendiary bombs dropped from drones, and some houses were badly damaged by shelling and airstrikes. All this devastation was caused by the junta deliberately targeting residential areas.”

The junta attacks have forced residents of these villages to to flee their homes and seek temporary shelter with relatives in other villages or in designated areas provided by the Arakan Army (AA). These displaced people are now struggling with inadequate accommodation and food shortages.

A resident displaced from Kyattein Village said: “When the fighting suddenly reached our village, we had to run for our lives. Everything we’d worked so hard for—our money, our belongings, even the rice we’d saved—was left behind in the house. Now that the house is burned down, we’ve lost everything. It's really hard for us.”

The fighting in Kyaukphyu Township has also displaced a further 24,000 residents from about 20 other villages, including the villages of Nham Phae Taung, Pyaing Sae Kay, Mintattaung, Kamdee, War Taw, Mau Taw, and Kalaba Taunggyi.

Fierce fighting is currently ongoing around the Kyaukphyu Township villages of Sittaw, Nham Phae Taung, and Pyinshay.

The junta is also frequently firing artillery into the Kyaukphyu Township villages of Sinboke, Minpyin, and Zinchaung, even though there is no fighting in those areas.
