Junta Airstrikes Hit Khampat Town and Nearby Villages

Junta aircraft carried out two bombing runs over Khampat Town in Tamu Township, Sagaing Region at around 6:00 pm on 21 January 2025.

A Tamu Township resident said to Khonumthung News: “Yesterday [21 January], junta fighter jets bombed the same area that was targeted the day before in Khampat Town. Two bombing runs were carried out near the entrance to Nankateik Village. Due to phone lines being down, it is currently impossible to contact Khampat, so the full extent of the damage remains unknown.”

Earlier, on the evening of 20 January,  junta aircraft carried out three bombing runs on Nankateik Village, about 3 kilometres from Khampat Town.

Talking of the airstrike a resident of Nankateik Village said: “It appears the junta dropped bombs on locations where it suspected young resistance fighters were hiding. However, the bombs only hit a compound in the village and a pile of coal near the village entrance. Two motorcycles were damaged, but no casualties were reported.”

Prior to that Khampat Town was hit by an airstrike on 16 January that killed six people, including a three-year-old child, and destroyed 16 buildings, including a monastery and several homes.

Khampat Town is on the road between Kale (Kalay) and Tamu townships. Also on the Kale to Tamu road is Sawbwaryaeshin Village in Kale Township, where a junta airstrike on 18 January killed three resistance fighters and injured 10 locals.

The more frequent airstrikes on Khampat Town and the surrounding areas have forced residents in those areas to flee their homes. Currently telecoms and internet services to those areas are also down.

Khampat Town was captured by joint resistance forces on 7 November 2023.
