Jailed NLD MP from Mohnyin, Daw Thet Htar Hnaung, sentenced to additional 11 years in prison by Myanmar's Military Council

The Military Council sentenced Daw Thet Htar Hnaung, the National League for Democracy (NLD) MP for Mohnyin Township, to 11 years in prison.

On March 30th, the Myitkyina Township Court handed down the verdict in the case against Daw Thet Htar Hnaung, who was indicted by the Military Council under Article 50 (J) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, a close person to her said.

"The authorities failed to release her in October 2022 as per the sentence for Section 505 (B), and instead, they pressed new charges against her, leading to an extension of her prison term”, the close person noted.

She is currently serving a one-year prison sentence under Section 505(B) of the Penal Code, which was handed down on May 26th, 2022.

On August 4th, 2021, the Military Council arrested her, accusing her of being involved in the formation of the Committee Representing of Kachin State Hluttaw (CRKH) and signing an acknowledgement. She was subsequently charged and jailed.

In the 2020 election, Daw Thet Htar Hnaung ran for the State Assembly seat in Mohnyin Township's No. 1 Constituency and emerged as the winner.
