Gov’t Quarantines Dozens Associated With Case-150

Forty-eight people that had contact with Burma’s COVID-19 case-150 were placed in a government quarantine in Hakha, the capital of Chin State.

Myint Oo, a Hakha general administration department officer, told Khonumthung News they’ll be quarantined for 21 days in Hakha College. Most are from the same village as case-150, and the rest are from Hakha and Thangtlang. Myint Oo explained that the eight from Thangtlang were on the same bus as case-150.

After returning from China, the woman stayed at a friend’s house in Kalay, located in Sagaing Region, instead of a government-mandated 14-day quarantine. When she left the friend’s house, the woman stayed for a week in her village Theeful and then reported to a government quarantine center in Hakha on April 16. According to the Ministry of Health and Sports, she tested positive for COVID-19 a few days later.

It’s unclear if the woman understood she was required to quarantine immediately after returning home or if she contracted the virus before reporting to her quarantine or after she stayed at the government facility.

Pau Lum Ming Thang, who is the Chin State Health and Social Affairs minister, said Theeful hasn’t been placed under lockdown but restrictions have been put in place on the woman’s house. There are only 60 homes in the village, which is located about 10 miles from Hakha.

Five infections were confirmed in Chin State. Burma’s first confirmed COVID-19 case was a 36-year-old man from Tedim who had returned from the US for his wedding. On April 30, he recovered and was discharged from the Tedim hospital. In total, 186 people are being quarantined in Chin State.
