Food delivery riders arrested

Food delivery motorcycle riders working for the German online food delivery company Food Panda were arrested on 21 March, according to a source.

The arrested riders were taken to Bo Sein Mann football Stadium in Yangon's Bahan Township for questioning.

It is unknown why they were arrested and Mizzima is still investigating.

Food Pander Riders have no basic salary or health insurance and despite rising commodity prices their wages have been cut. Previously riders received between 900 and 1,00 kyats per delivery but now they only receive about 300 kyats per delivery.

Riders protested the unannounced pay cuts by going on strike from 16 March. They also asked people to stop using the Food Panda app from 20 March.

Activists groups also urged the public to join the 20 March “Food Panda strike” and said that the company is violating labour rights by cutting the drivers’ wages in this way.
