Flyers distributed to public to disclose IDP’s hardships

Members of student unions handed out leaflets in Yangon’s Dagon University to inform people about the daily sufferings of people who are affected by the armed conflict in Arakan State and other regions.

The pamphlets were distributed on Wednesday by five student unions including the Arakanese Students’ Union (Universities in Yangon), Yangon Students’ Union of Yangon University of Education (A.B.F.U), Yangon Universities Students’ Union and Dagon University Students’ Union.

The flyer includes information about the fighting in Arakan State including the death toll, said Ko Kyaw Zwar Linn, spokesperson of the Arakanese Students’ Union (Universities in Yangon).

It also includes information about the Internet ban in Arakan State. As many as 83 people died during the war in Arakan State and over 100,000 people have been displaced home due to war in Kachin State that started in 2011, Ko Kyaw Zwar Linn said.

“We circulated the information so that people could know what is happening in these regions. If a government can violate human rights against one community, it could easily do the same thing to other communities. We want to alert people that they can easily be victims too,” he said.

They also demanded the immediate release of people who have been arrested on suspicion of involvement with the AA and to lift the Internet ban in Arakan State, he added.

“We want to boost the public awareness about these situations so people can know the truth about conflicts and their adverse consequences that hurt innocent civilians. We will arrange an exhibition or post additional information about war,” Ko Kyaw Zwar Linn said.
