Flights to Myitkyina set to resume on April 5

Domestic flights to Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State, are scheduled to resume on April 5, Myanmar National Airlines (MNA) announced.

According to the MNA website, flights between Yangon–Myitkyina and Mandalay–Myitkyina will operate on April 5, with round-trip services starting on April 8.

“Ticket sales for other routes haven’t started yet, but we expect them to open soon,” said a ticket salesperson at the airport.

Airfares are approximately 950,000 MMK for a one-way Yangon–Myitkyina trip and around 700,000 MMK for a one-way Mandalay–Myitkyina trip.

On March 25, coup leader Min Aung Hlaing called for prioritizing flights to Myitkyina and Putao in Kachin State. More than a week later, flights to Myitkyina resumed.

The MNA website currently lists flights only for April 5 and 8; operations beyond those dates remain unclear.

Residents of Myitkyina hope air travel to other cities will resume to meet health, education, and social needs.

On February 20, a drone attacked an MNA aircraft at Myitkyina Airport. While no passengers were injured, the aircraft sustained damage, prompting the junta to suspend all flights to Myitkyina.

Then the outbreak of war in the Middle East involving Iran, the United States and Israel triggered a global fuel supply shock, driving up energy prices and contributed to aviation disruptions, leading airlines to suspend some domestic flights in Myanmar amid rising fuel costs and shortages.

Domestic flights resumed on March 25, though services to Myitkyina were not included at first.

Rising fuel prices and limited flight options also pushed Mandalay–Myitkyina bus fares to more than double, reaching around 1 million MMK per passenger for a round trip.
