The Mon State government announced that over 3,500 households have been affected by flash floods across the Mon State after strong wind and constant rain hit the state on June 17.
A total of 2,101 households from Mawlamyine Township, 320 households from Mudon Township, seven households from Thanbyuzayat Township, and 1,370 households from Ye Township have to evacuate to relief camps in monasteries, schools, community halls, and stadiums.
“The water [level] receded today. [The water level] in some areas is two or three feet high. [One] can travel on the roads now. Three or four relief camps have been opened due to yesterday’s situation. They have returned home now since the water level has receded,” said U Myint Than Win, director of the Mon State government.
Respective government departments have been providing healthcare and food assistance to the flood-affected victims that are taking refuge at the relief camps and the Union Minister has provided Ks 2,100 per person.
Nai Hu, a salt business owner from Pa Nga Village in Thanbyuzayat Township, said the floods took place within an hour due to the overflowing of water from the mountain stream caused by heavy rain and high sea level.
“There had been heavy rain like this before, but such kind of flooding has never happened before. Flooding took place in 1990. This time, the flood water reached up to two ‘taung’ (three feet) on the railway,” said Nai Hu.
According to the Mon State government, an estimate of over Ks 640 million have been lost due to flooding on roads, landslides, destruction of salt furnaces, falling of lamp posts, and flooding of homes in Mawlamyine, Chaungzon, Mudon, Thanbyuzayat, Ye, Paung, and Kyaikmaraw townships.
The union government has donated 12 fiber motor boats, which cost Ks 2.1 million each, to the flood-affected areas in the Mon State.
