Five Killed in Airstrike on Detention Center in Mese Township

An airstrike carried out by the military junta targeted a detention center under the judiciary department in Mese Township, Karenni State, at around 10 a.m. today, killing five people, according to U Banyar, Secretary-2 of the Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC).

“The detention center was bombed. Four women and one man were killed,” U Banyar said.

The victims were individuals being held at the detention center. Among those killed were four women, including an underage girl, and one man, who were struck and killed by the bombing.

The location targeted by the junta’s airstrike was a place where family members of captured junta soldiers, who had been detained during fighting, were being held.

In Mese Township, local residents have also become increasingly concerned about security following an incident on January 18, when 86 prisoners of war escaped from Prison No. 2.

Although Mese Township is a town in Karenni State located close to the Thai border, the military junta has been frequently carrying out airstrike attacks in the area.
