Enquiry Committee investigates Yenangyaung land dispute

The Magway Region government chief minister has formed an enquiry committee and assigned region government labour minister Myint Swe as head of the team to investigate an alluvial land dispute and conflict in Yenangyaung Township, Magway Region, which killed 24 people after a boat capsized.

CM Dr. Aung Moe Nyo said the committee was assigned to investigate the conflict in detail and shall submit its report not later than August 5.

The fateful incident took place on July 23 at about 3:05 p.m. in Yenangyaung Township in which villagers from Pha Ye Kyun village of Man Myat village-tracts and Kan Thar village of Kyan Kaing Kyun village-tracts fought over the alluvial land.

A press statement issued by Region Government says that in this incident some villagers of Pha Ye village were left stranded in the area and had to hurriedly board a motorboat in the chaos the boat capsized.

After the boat capsized and sank the Pha Ye village rechecked and recounted the number of villagers that arrived back and found 40 villagers were missing. According to available figures on July 25, 24 villagers were confirmed dead, 14 still missing and two found alive and rescued.
