Diarrhea Outbreak Reported Among Residents and Fishermen in Kyaikkhami

Cases of diarrhea have been reported among local residents, including fishermen, in Kyaikkhami town, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, according to local sources.

The outbreak reportedly began on April 30 when five fishermen from Aungthukha Ward in Kyaikkhami developed diarrhea symptoms.

A source close to the township public health department said the five fishermen were admitted to Kyaikkhami Public Hospital, while four patients in serious condition were transferred to Mawlamyine General Hospital for further treatment.

“In addition, more than 30 family members of the fishermen and local residents from the ward have also been sent to Kyaikkhami Public Hospital, where they are being quarantined and monitored,” the source said.

Due to the outbreak, a disease prevention team from the State Public Health Department conducted field inspections on May 1.

The Thanbyuzayat Township Public Health Department is also carrying out awareness campaigns and preventive measures related to the diarrhea outbreak in Kyaikkhami.

During 2024, around 80 local residents, including fishermen from Kyaikkhami, were infected with diarrhea, and at least six people died from the outbreak.
