Despite the School Reopening Period Approaching, Displacement Camp Schools Still Face Major Needs

Although the time to reopen schools is approaching, schools in displacement camps across Karenni State are still facing significant needs for assistance and resources, according to officials from various schools.

To resume classes in the displacement camps, some schools are struggling with difficulties in repairing or constructing school buildings. Meanwhile, other schools are still lacking teaching materials, school supplies, and even teaching staff, especially teachers.

On May 18, strong winds also damaged the roof of Htay Seh Kue School in eastern Hpruso Township. According to the school principal, they need assistance to rebuild it.

The school principal said that requests for support to repair the storm-damaged roof had already been submitted to some local organizations and the IEC education department, but no assistance has been received so far.

“We have already submitted requests, but we haven’t received anything yet. We reported the need for shelter assistance to the Seh Theh Foundation and the IEC education officials,” the principal said.

Besides Hpruso Township, many needs also remain in eastern Loikaw Township as well as both eastern and western parts of Demoso Township.

Htay Seh Kue school, whose roof was damaged, currently offers classes from Grade 1 to Grade 9, with a total of 123 students and 12 teachers.

As the school is preparing to reopen in June, the school administration has appealed for support to meet the urgent needs.
