Poe War — The death toll from a tragic boat accident in Ponnagyun Township, Rakhine State, has risen to 11, according to local authorities and witnesses.
While emergency responders initially recovered eight bodies immediately after the vessel sank, three more victims have since been confirmed dead.
The deceased have been identified asDaw Ma Thaung (61), Daw Amu Chey (46), Ma Naing Naing Win (26), Daw Yee Yee San (50), Ma Soe Yu Wai (24), Ko Nyan Lin Wai (33), Ko Maung Zi (29), U Khin Maung (66), U Than Kyaw Sein (40), U Thein Kyawt Wai (44) and U Maung Thein Shwe (64).
The incident occurred at 12:15 p.m. on June 15 in the Kin Chaung creek near Ponnagyun, a town located approximately 20 miles north of the state capital, Sittwe.
The boat was en route from Gu Taung village in Rathedaung Township to Kyauktaw Township when it capsized.
The vessel was reportedly carrying 35 passengers, most of whom were traveling to a local market to purchase stones. Search and rescue operations remain underway, led by local authorities, rescue organizations, and social assistance groups seeking those who are still missing.
