CPI’s model village starts deteriorating after eight years in Kachin State

Homes have started to deteriorate in Aung Myin Thar Village  after the local residents were forced to relocate to the model village eight years ago to make way for the Myitsone dam project.

The Chinese government’s China Power Investment Corporation built these homes for the relocated residents in 2010.

“When we told them about the damages in our home, they repaired them, but they did it clumsily. Now, it’s been damaged again even though it was only repaired recently. The foundation wasn’t strong so there are holes,” said Daw Dashi La Hkawn, a local resident.

She said the Chinese company used wood blocks, plastic, sawdust, and cement bags in the foundation when they built the houses and these items were found during the house repairs.

The village residents said the houses built by CPI look nice in appearance but their structures are weak.

“All the roofs were blown off in my home after a little wind blew. They only repaired the roofs that were blown off. They didn’t repair them properly,” said Jan. Ja Hkawn from Aung Myin Thar Village.

The company has been repairing the homes that have been damaged since 2015, but the house owners have to pay for the repair costs.

Although the local residents had to relocate to Aung Myin Thar Village due to Myitsone dam project, all of them want to return back to their original areas, Jan. Ja Hkawn added.
