Census finds over 46,000 displaced by fighting in Bamauk Township

A recent census has recorded around 46,000 people displaced by ongoing clashes in Banmauk Township, according to a source involved in the survey.

Of the total, more than 44,000 fled during the latest wave of fighting, while over 2,000 were displaced in earlier clashes, the source said.

“The census took about two weeks, roughly 15 days. During that time, we, along with volunteers and local residents, also provided assistance to the displaced people,” said one of the census participants.

A local group has been providing cash assistance of 3,800 kyats per person, helping displaced families to manage their basic needs with the support of donors.

“Currently, external organizations, civil society groups, and local entrepreneurs have stepped in to help. Just yesterday, rice, oil, and salt were distributed. Thanks to the support of these groups, the situation has recently improved,” said an official from the People’s Administration of Banmauk Township.

Meanwhile, the Battalion 4 of the Military Region 1 in Katha District has imposed a curfew in Banmauk Township, restricting residents from going out between 9 pm and 5 am.

The curfew, issued on 9 November, includes warnings that strict measures will be taken against violators. Authorities said the restrictions aim to prevent security risks and support ongoing military operations in the area.

Fighting in Banmauk, which began on 15 September, continues to intensify in the township.
