A Border Guard Force (BGF) member was injured when a landmine exploded while he was patrolling near the Myanmar-Bangladesh border fence in northern Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, over the weekend.
An unnamed police officer said the BGF policeman sustained a foot injury on Saturday morning when he stepped on a landmine between Mileposts 40 and 41 while on patrol near the border fence.
“He’s got an injury to his ankle. He is being treated at the Buthidaung military hospital,” the police officer said, adding that the landmine was planted by “insurgents.”
The site of the explosion was near the Myanmar-Bangladesh fence on the ridge of Wela Taung village in the upper part of Khamaung Seik town.
Ko Ne Win Tun, a resident of Khamaung Seik town, said: “I heard that two border guard police were injured after stepping on a landmine. At first, they were taken to Kyain Chaung Hospital.”
A clash broke out between the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and Border Guard Police near old Zee Bin Chaung village in northern Maungdaw Township on October 31. Five ARSA members were arrested and one firearm was confiscated in the altercation, according to reports.
