Artillery shell blast injures four people in Ann Township

Myo Thiri Kyaw —Four residents of Sin Oo Tike village in Arakan State’s Ann Township were injured by an artillery shell blast on April 8.

They were hit by the shell at around 8 p.m. while attempting to take shelter in a protective bunker. One of the injured, 18-year-old Mg Nu Wai, received a severe injury to his left eye and nose.

The other injured villagers are U Thaung Hla Shwe, 30, who suffered an injury to his left leg; U San Thein Tun, 37, who received a head wound; and Daw Hla Hla Nwe, 32, who sustained an injury to the right side of her chest.

“My nephew Mg Nu Wai was about to get in the bunker and he got hit by pieces of shell,” said Daw Tun May Nu, a relative of the injured man.

Currently, the four are being treated at the Kan Htaung Gyi town hospital in Myebon Township, and will be brought to Sittwe General Hospital.

Locals said that on April 8 they heard the sound of shooting for about an hour near Swi Chaung village, which is located about three miles from Sin Oo Tike village.

The number of civilian casualties due to fighting between the Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army continues to rise. On April 5, the Burma Monitor research group said that 128 people were killed and 147 were injured last month amid the conflict, across 10 townships in Arakan State and in neighbouring Paletwa Township, Chin State.
