ARSA commander arrested for terror activities by Bangladesh Army

Khaing Lu Hla (Roma Mray) — Bangladesh armed forces have arrested a commander of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) from the international border with Myanmar for orchestrating various terror activities, reports a local news agency TTN.

The arrested individual is identified as Zahid Hossain Prakash Lalu (40), who remained active in the Rakhine border areas with Bangladesh for some time.

The operation was carried out by the Cox's Bazar based infantry division, under a special initiative by Battalion No-10, on 4 February at around 7 am  in Ukihia town near the Rakhine border.

It was conducted suddenly in the Rohingya refugee camp-1 (west) area that resulted in the seizure of a pistol, one magazine and two bullets also.

ARSA commander Lalu is accused of involvement in various crimes including murders of  a Bangladesh army intelligence (DGFI) officer and Muslim refugee leader Master Muhibullah.

According to an intelligence report, Lalu is a close aide and bodyguard of ARSA leader Hafez Ataullah Abu Ammar Jununi, who is currently facing criminal charges in Bangladesh.

The arrested commander is suspected to be one of those masterminds who are involved in different ARSA terror activities along the border areas.

Lalu  is suspected to be directly involved in the horrific murder of refugee leader Muhibullah in 2021 and also killing of DGFI officer Md Rezwan. He was also a mastermind in attacking a Madrasa in Camp-18,  where six people, including teachers and students, were killed.

Moreover, he is accused of other crimes like kidnappings, extortion, and drug deals in the locality.

The special army operation was aimed to create a peaceful ambience ahead of 13th Bangladesh national elections, scheduled for 12 February next.

This action is assumed as a significant initiative to maintain peace and tranquility in the entire region covering many Rohingya refugee camps.
