Construction of Myanmar’s largest natural gas power plant is set to finish up next year and give a much-needed boost to the country’s electricity supply, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

The 225-megawatt Myingyan gas-fired power plant in Mandalay is scheduled for completion in May 2018. Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries signed a 22-year, built-operate-transfer contract for the project in January.

According to a statement from Sembcorp, under the power purchase agreement signed in March 2016, the plant’s entire power output will be sold to the Electric Power Generation Enterprise.

The plant joins two others in Thaungtha township: 90-megawatt gas-fired plant built by Agrico Company and a 133-megawatt gas-fired plant built by V-power Company.

Sembcorp’s US$300 million Myingyan plant will be powered by Shwe natural gas from Rakhine State.

U Chan Myae Aung, an electrical engineer from Kyaukphyu township, said on a daily basis 100 million cubic feet from Shwe Natural Gas will be split between an 80-megawatt gas-fired power plant in Kyaukse township, the three power plants in Thaungtha township and a gas-fired power plant in Kyaukphyu township.

“Power is currently distributed to ten wards in Kyaukphyu ... Two more villages were recently added so it is now being distributed to 47 villages,” he told Narinjara News.
