Anti-coup movement participant teacher and husband killed in brutal stabbing

A teacher involved in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), an anti-coup campaign in which civil servants and security personnel refuse to work for the military regime, and her husband, were killed in a multiple-stabbing attack in Palaw Township, Myeik District, Tanintharyi Region.

The CDM participant teacher and her husband were brutally murdered in their home in Sarkhe Village, according to People’s Defence Force (PDF) Myeik District Battalion 1.

At around 2:00 am on December 16, an unidentified group broke into the home of 49-year-old teacher Daw Aye Thi Aung and brutally killed her and her husband.

Daw Aye Thi Aung was a member of the resistance-run education board in Palaw Township and led efforts to provide schooling for children in resistance stronghold areas.

“Inside the house, both bodies were found with multiple stab wounds, including to their mouths and necks. The teacher had more wounds than her husband. Their home was located in a sparsely populated area,” said a witness.

The brutal killing of an education worker actively involved in the revolution in Sarkhe Village, a PDF stronghold, has shocked locals.

The bodies of the slain couple were cremated at the village cemetery on the morning of December 17, according to villagers.

Myeik District Battalion 1 condemned the killing as an inhumane terrorist act and announced the formation of a special investigation task force to identify and take action against the perpetrators.

Myeik District Battalion 1 stated that it strongly condemns the killing of the teacher and her husband, calling it an inhumane act of terror. No group has claimed responsibility for the killings so far.

Military tensions are currently ongoing between the junta and resistance groups in Myeik District.

The killing, which took place in a resistance stronghold, has heightened security concerns among locals.
