Airstrike Injures Displaced Monk in Kyaukphyu Township

A displaced monk sheltering in a monastery in Kyaukpyauk Village, Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan (Rakhine) State was injured in a junta airstrike at 12:00 am on 22 July 2025.

The injured monk who was sheltering at the Kyaukpyauk Village monastery had fled from fighting in Zaichuang Village, also in Kyaukphyu Township.

A Kyaukphyu Township resident said: “Two bombs were dropped in the attack, they landed between the monastery building and the ordination hall. A war-displaced monk who was sheltering there got injured. He’s been taken to the hospital, but we don’t know yet how serious his injuries are.”

The airstrike also badly damaged the monastery and the ordination hall.

Previously, on 24 May 2025, a displaced woman from Pyaing Sae Kay Village also in Kyaukphyu Township who was sheltering in Kyaukpyauk Village was injured when a junta warship shelled the village.

In Kyaukphyu Township, villages like Kyaukpyauk, Minpyin, Pyuchwain, and Zinchaung sit along the Yangon to Kyaukphyu Highway, and these coastal villages are also occasionally shelled from the sea by junta warships, though this most recent attack on the monastery was just carried out by a junta aircraft.

Another Kyaukphyu Township resident said: “Warships are usually stationed off the coast of villages from Zinchaung to Minpyin, and they sometimes attack the villages. In this case, the junta also used aircraft to bomb Kyaukpyauk Village.”

Since March 2024, at least 15 people have been killed and around 30 injured in Kyaukphyu Township, by shelling from junta warships, airstrikes and landmines, according to data collated by DMG.

But since 10 July 2025, the situation in Kyaukphyu Township has been relatively calmer as there has been no fighting on the ground in the area, though the junta has continued to launch airstrikes and fire artillery into the area from its bases and warships
