On October 19, the Arakan Army (AA) issued a military alert due to ongoing movements by the Myanmar army in Arakan (Rakhine), which aims to seize towns currently held by the AA.
In a document named "Notice and Prohibition Order," the AA declared that the Myanmar army, under the existing military government, has been organizing military efforts with greater care than in the past.
Especially in cities like Sittwe and Kyaukpyu, where there is conflict involving the Arakan Army, the military junta is slowly enhancing its power via naval forces.
At the same time, the junta army has been increasing its naval activities in the waters close to Thandwe and Gwa areas that are entirely under the control of the Arakan Army. Surveillance planes have been conducting flights over these cities with greater frequency in recent days.
The military government has been increasing efforts to reclaim certain cities that are currently under the control of the Arakan Army.
As a result of these conditions, nighttime fishing in the waters near Thandwe and Gwa, situated in the southern area of Arakan State close to the Irrawaddy region, has been prohibited indefinitely from 6 p. m. until 6 a. m. starting on October 19.
The unlimited fishing ban enables the Burmese military to strengthen its troops and ensure safety for its fishing vessels during their operations.
Previously, the AA permitted fishermen in coastal towns and villages to fish in the ocean without any time limits in order to address the crisis and support family livelihoods. However, due to the present military circumstances, this has now been restricted.
Considering that junta warships are firing heavy weapons at innocent fishing boats and detaining or killing fishermen at sea, the AA recommends avoiding fishing far from the coast during daylight hours. If warships are seen coming close, fishermen are advised to head back to the shore or remain near the shore promptly.
The ban on nighttime fishing is effective immediately and will continue until further notice.
