60% tax to be levied on all liquors

Union Parliament (joint sitting of both houses) passed a bill to levy 60% excise duty on varieties of liquors being sold on the market.

Parliament joint Bill Committee secretary Dr. Myat Nyar Na Soe said, “We levy 120% on cigarettes. So, we levy 60% tax on liquors.”

The Union Tax Law 2019 says 50% tax will be levied on varieties of wines and 60% tax will be levied on varieties of beers.

In the original bill, tax to be levied on liquors were divided to 16 tiers and maximum 60% tax will be levied on liquors priced at more than 15,001 kyats per litre and now the new law will levy all liquors at the flat rate of 60%.

“The collection of taxes will be the same rate on both export and import liquors.” Dr. Myat Nyar Na Soe added.
