Restrictions create obstacles for displaced people in Tanintharyi to buy food

As the fighting intensified, it became more difficult for those fleeing the conflict in Tanintharyi Township to get food and medicine due to restrictions imposed by both sides, the aid workers told Than Lwin Times.

Since March, clashes between the military council and local defense forces have occurred frequently in Tanintharyi Township, where martial law has been declared, and the fighting has intensified in recent days.

The revolutionary forces have warned against using the Union Road and Tanintharyi-Mawtaung highways in Tanintharyi Township, and the military council has banned the transportation of foodstuffs and medicine.

Due to the restrictions by both sides, aid workers are unable to reach the IDPs, and they are having difficulty in buying food and medicine due to the intense fighting.

At the moment, the displaced people are running low on food, with only enough left for the next two weeks.

As a result of the fighting, more than 15,000 residents from more than 15 villages, including Thein Khun, Yebyu, Thaebyu, Chaung Hna Pauk, and Ban Lamut in Taninthary Township, have fled the conflict, and most of them have taken refuge in the forests, fields, and monasteries.

Locals said that some people have moved to other places for good, including Myeik, where there is no fighting.

More than 40,000 people have left their homes in Tanintharyi region as a result of fighting in the two years following the military coup, according to data from local research groups.
