Military council enacts Union Taxation Law

On March 30, military leader General Min Aung Hlaing revised the Union Taxation Law for 2023 under Article 419 of the Constitution, reported the propaganda newspapers.

This law shall be called the Union Taxation Law, 2023, and it shall come into effect on April 1, 2023, said the statement.

Regarding the specific goods, if a pack of 20 cigarettes of various types is sold up to 700 Kyats, the tax will be 10 Kyats per cigarette, and if it is sold for 1101 Kyats or more, the tax rate will be up to 27 Kyats per cigarette.

Tobacco and cured virginia tobacco will be taxed at 60 %, while cigars, pipe tobacco, and various types of betel chewing preparation will be taxed at 80 %, and cheroots will be taxed at one Kyat.

Liquor and various types of beer will be taxed at 60 % of the value of one liter, and for wine, taxes are set at 50 % of the value of one liter of it.

Kerosene, gasoline, diesel oil, and jet fuel are subject to a 5 % tax as special goods, and an 8 % tax on natural gas.

No commercial tax shall be charged on consumer goods, agricultural and breeding goods, goods used in schools and offices, health-related goods, goods used in religion and welfare, and goods used in the consumer and transportation sectors.

Since the junta began to control the country’s three pillars of power, until today, the military council has issued orders and laws in accordance with Article 419 of the Constitution without approval of the parliament.
