Shelling in Tanintharyi Township leaves one child dead, eight injured

A child was killed and at least 8 others were injured due to shelling by the Military Council at Le Thit village in Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region, locals said.

On March 10th at approximately 7:00 AM, the Military Council's artillery battalion, stationed in Tanintharyi Township, carried out indiscriminate bombardments on Le Thit and surrounding villages at least 10 times.

According to local reports, several rounds of artillery fired by the Military Council landed and exploded in residential areas and streets east of Le Thit village, resulting in the tragic death of one child and causing injuries to at least eight other individuals.

"They have been shelling since early morning. At around 7:00 AM, four artillery rounds struck the eastern part of the village and exploded, while additional shells falling outside the village. Tragically, an 8-year-old child was killed, and eight others were wounded, some with minor injuries. The artillery rounds also caused damage to the houses and the street in the area”, a local said.

The majority of the wounded are currently receiving medical treatment at a clinic located in the liberated territory. It has been reported that most of the injured individuals are between the ages of 40 and 60.

Furthermore, four houses in the village were also destroyed due to the barrages of the Military Council.

Due to the dominance of the People's Defense Forces (PDF) in the eastern regions of Le Thit and several nearby villages, the Military Council frequently resorts to indiscriminate shelling in those areas.

The Military Council was conducting random shelling in the area without any ongoing fighting in the latest incident, a PDF fighter said.

"This territory can be defined as an area under our control. In the past, they used to pound with artillery when there were clashes in the area. However, these days, without any provocation, they are opening fire indiscriminately”, he explained.

Tanintharyi Township has been declared a martial law area by the Military Council, with additional troops being deployed as local clashes between the council and the People's Defense Forces (PDF) have escalated in recent days, causing civilians to flee.
